How Military Pay Is Taxed
Basic pay is generally taxable, while qualifying BAH and BAS are generally excluded from federal taxable income. Your LES separates the categories.

Common taxable items
Basic pay, many bonuses and many special pays are generally included in taxable wages unless a specific exclusion applies. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare treatment can differ by item.
Commonly excluded allowances
Qualifying BAH and BAS are generally excluded from federal gross income. A non-taxable allowance still affects cash flow and total compensation even though it does not appear in taxable wages the same way as basic pay.
State withholding depends on legal residence
Military state-tax rules can depend on domicile, duty location and spouse circumstances. The state shown on the LES should be reviewed after a move, marriage or change in legal residence.
Combat-zone rules need individual review
Qualified service in a combat zone can exclude eligible pay subject to statutory rules and officer limits. Dates, location and pay type matter. Use an official tax resource or qualified preparer for a return involving combat-zone treatment.
Read taxable wages separately from cash compensation
A member can receive basic pay, BAH and BAS in the same month, but those items do not necessarily receive the same federal tax treatment. Cash received is therefore not the same as taxable wages reported for the period.
State withholding adds another layer because legal residence, duty location and spouse circumstances can differ. Review the state shown on the LES after a PCS or domicile change rather than assuming the duty state controls.

Common questions
Are BAH and BAS generally included in federal taxable income?
Qualifying BAH and BAS are generally excluded, while basic pay and many bonuses or special pays are taxable unless a specific exclusion applies.
Does a duty-station move automatically change state residence?
No. Domicile and withholding involve facts beyond the duty address. Review the LES and use qualified tax guidance for the individual situation.
