The 15th is the mid-month payment. The payment due on the first of the following month is the end-of-month payment.

The two active-duty payments

  • Mid-month pay is scheduled on or before the 15th.
  • End-of-month pay is scheduled on or before the first day of the following month.
  • Weekend and holiday adjustments can move either date.

Why the month label looks confusing

A March end-of-month payment can arrive on April 1. It is still called March end-of-month pay because it closes the March pay period. The entitlement period and deposit calendar month are not always the same.

How deductions are split

Some monthly deductions are divided between mid-month and end-of-month pay. Others can appear in one payment. Your LES provides the authoritative breakdown for the month.

Early bank availability

A bank may release the incoming deposit before the DFAS date. This does not change the pay period or turn an end-of-month payment into a mid-month payment.

How one monthly entitlement becomes two deposits

Military basic pay tables quote a monthly rate. Active-duty payroll normally divides the month into a mid-month payment and an end-of-month payment, but the two net deposits do not have to be identical.

Some deductions are split, while others are taken primarily from one side of the month. A promotion, PCS, debt or retroactive entitlement can also appear in one cycle. Use the full monthly LES to reconcile the result.

What to compare when deposits differ

Compare payroll records before assuming one half of the month was underpaid.

  • Monthly basic-pay rate for grade and longevity
  • Mid-month amount shown on the LES
  • End-of-month net pay and all monthly deductions
  • Remarks for effective-date or retroactive transactions

Common questions

Should each deposit equal exactly half of monthly basic pay?

Not necessarily. Deductions, allotments and adjustments can be distributed unevenly. The LES shows how monthly entitlements became net pay.

Why is March end-of-month pay sometimes deposited in April?

The label describes the March entitlement period. Its official payday can fall on the first business day of the following calendar month.
