Your LES explains why gross military compensation and the amount deposited into your bank are rarely identical.

Start with identity and service data

Confirm the statement period, pay grade, years of service and pay-entry base date before reviewing dollars. A promotion or longevity increase entered late can produce a current adjustment or retroactive payment.

Review entitlements

  • Basic pay should match the applicable grade and longevity bracket.
  • BAH depends on duty-station ZIP, grade, dependency status and any individual rate protection.
  • BAS uses the current officer or enlisted rate.
  • Special pays should correspond to a documented assignment or qualification.

Separate deductions from allotments

Deductions can include federal and state withholding, FICA, SGLI, TSP contributions and debts. Allotments are directed payments made from pay. Review both before assuming a lower deposit means basic pay was calculated incorrectly.

Read the remarks section

Remarks often explain starts, stops, retroactive changes and debts that are not obvious from a single line in the entitlement section. Compare the current LES with the preceding month when investigating a change.

When to contact finance

  1. Save the affected LES and the preceding LES.
  2. Identify the exact line and effective date that appears wrong.
  3. Gather orders or supporting documents.
  4. Contact the servicing finance or personnel office using your branch process.

A reliable way to reconcile gross pay to the deposit

Begin with total entitlements, subtract deductions and allotments, and compare the result with the net amount shown on the LES. Then match that net amount to the bank deposit for the same pay cycle. This prevents a bank-availability question from being confused with a payroll-calculation question.

When the numbers do not reconcile, compare the current LES with the previous one line by line. A new entitlement can be offset by a new deduction, while a retroactive correction can create several lines that net to a smaller change than expected.

LES review checklist

Keep enough information to identify the transaction without circulating an unredacted statement.

  • Current and prior LES copies stored securely
  • Orders or personnel action supporting the effective date
  • Expected grade, longevity, duty location and dependency status
  • The exact entitlement, deduction or remarks line in question

Common questions

Is the LES the same as a bank statement?

No. The LES is the payroll statement explaining entitlements, deductions and net pay. The bank statement only confirms when and where the net deposit posted.

Which LES section usually explains a surprise adjustment?

Start with entitlements and deductions, then read the remarks. Remarks often identify effective dates, debts and retroactive starts or stops.
