Core rule

Special pay compensates for a documented skill, duty, hazard or retention need. A published rate is not proof that an individual assignment qualifies.

Common categories

  • Aviation and flight pays
  • Submarine and diving duty pays
  • Hazardous duty incentive pays
  • Medical and dental special pays
  • Language proficiency pay
  • Assignment, accession and retention incentives

Authorization comes before the rate

Most special pays require qualifying orders, certification, skill status, duty performance or a signed agreement. The maximum in a table may exceed the amount authorized for a particular specialty or experience level.

Start and stop dates matter

Expired qualifications, duty changes and late personnel transactions can cause overpayments or missing pay. Keep certificates, agreements and orders for the full period they support.

How to verify a special-pay line

Identify the exact pay name and authority, then compare the LES line with the current official table and authorization. Generic searches for “hazard pay” can lead to the wrong entitlement.

Start with the exact entitlement name

“Hazard pay,” “flight pay” or “bonus” can refer to several authorities with different rates and qualification rules. Identify the formal pay name on the agreement, order or LES before opening a rate table.

A qualification can expire or an assignment can end before payroll stops the line. Review start and stop dates after every transfer, recertification or agreement milestone to reduce both missing-pay and overpayment risk.

What to verify on the pay record

Use the following items together; a dollar amount without the supporting authority and effective dates is not enough to confirm entitlement.

  • Exact statutory or program pay name
  • Orders, agreement or certification
  • Qualification and expiration dates
  • Current DFAS table and LES entitlement line

Common questions

Does appearing in a pay table prove eligibility?

No. The member must satisfy the underlying skill, duty, agreement or certification authority.

Why might the LES show less than the table maximum?

Many tables contain ceilings or multiple experience and duty categories. The maximum is not necessarily the authorized individual rate.

Published does not mean entitled. Orders, location, qualifications and service records determine whether a member receives an allowance or special pay. Confirm the individual case with the servicing finance office.
